Siama's Congo at the Minnesota State Fair

Join us at the Great Minnesota Get-Together for a performance from Siama's Congo! Siama and Dallas Johnson will come together to bring you the sounds of the Congo and the beauty of Africa. 

Featuring Siama's spirited vocals and masterful, arpeggiated guitar playing, everyone's encouraged to sing along in Kikongo, Swahili and Lingala while learning traditional African singing styles (like yodeling and call-and-response) and how to play African rhythms while experiencing the welcoming, celebratory nature of African music.

Kalpulli Ketzal Coatlicue at the Minnesota State Fair

Join Kalpulli Ketzal Coatlicue at the Great Minnesota Get-Together! Driving drum rhythms and dazzling costumes hold students’ interest, and through each step the dancer in full regalia gives life to the symbols of the dance. Aztec dance performance creates a connection between contemporary dancers and the elders who have preserved this expression of culture. The Aztec symbols of life are reproduced in the dance steps.

Inspired by African American quilting traditions and styles such as scrap quilts and story quilts, students will combine painting, fabric, and visual storytelling to create pieces of art that share personal stories, biographies, or stories written in preparation for the residency.
