Professional Development for Educators

Support student creativity and success at the same time with a professional development program from COMPAS! With revised academic standards in the arts going into effect for Minnesota schools in 2021, we want to make sure you have all the support you need to help your students excel. As both professional, working artists and experienced educators, COMPAS Teaching Artists are well equipped to teach and coach classroom teachers in a variety of topics. Our work with educators normally takes the shape of single-session workshops or longer-term coaching partnerships.

  • Arts-X is an experiential model where participants learn alongside a Teaching Artist to explore and/or deepen their skills in a particular art form.

  • Arts+ allows teachers and participants to explore a specific academic subject through an art form.

  • Arts-In teaches educators arts integration approaches that they can incorporate into different subjects.

Students who regularly participate in classroom arts activities perform better on writing assessments, show greater empathy for others, and are more engaged in learning!

Professional Development Workshops

COMPAS Teaching Artists can join your team during a regular professional development session for a partial- or full-day workshop. Build new skills in the arts to help establish intercultural competency in the classroom, learn how to infuse your curriculum with creativity, practice new methods for incorporating creative writing across disciplines, harness the power of active learning to engage your students, and more!

Teaching Artist Coaching Program

Learning through the arts is fabulous experiential learning for us teachers, and reminds us of why adding the arts to lessons throughout the year benefits our kids. I came away from each session more focused, energized and hopeful about my chosen profession.
— Rana Nestrud, Art Teacher and Fine Arts Coordinator at Elk River High School

COMPAS Teaching Artists can work with a core group of teachers over the course of an entire semester or school year, helping your team infuse units and lesson plans with arts activities that meet academic and arts standards at the same time! Meet regularly with your Teaching Artist, get personalized feedback on lesson plans, and practice new skills to integrate the arts into every aspect of your Creative Curriculum.

Work with any of the following Teaching Artists (and more!) to build your professional skills and bring success to your students!

Note: In response to the challenges presented by COVID-19, COMPAS continues to find innovative ways to connect communities with arts experiences wherever – and however - we can. For more information, contact Program Director Julie Strand.
