The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council is delighted to present an exciting exhibit of student artworks created during summer “Camp Art” in Hallock, MN. The exhibit in our East Grand Forks gallery features whimsical papier-mache hand-puppets, amusing animated videos, glazed hand-formed ceramic animals and cups, charming landscapes and sand paintings, sparkling glass mosaic stepping stones, and nature-themed decorated fabric bags.
The Camp Art Exhibit will be on display in the Arts Council gallery, located within the River Walk Artists gallery and gift shop, September 25th through October 20th, including the final Art & Wine Walk on October 19th. Admission is free.
Teacher Shannon Christenson first coordinated Camp Art in 2010, inviting students on summer break to spend a week creating art. Bringing in professional artist-teachers from COMPAS, Camp Art was hugely successful. The program, which has grown from 30 participants to over 70, has been primarily funded with a grant from the NWMAC with funding from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment in Minnesota.
This year’s artworks were made with visiting COMPAS artists John Akre, who taught computer animation; Malia Burkhart whose focus is puppetry, and Sarah Nassif who incorporates nature and botany into screen printing techniques. Works from the past three summer’s art camps with other COMPAS teaching artists are included in the exhibit.
COMPAS is a statewide, non-profit arts organization in Minnesota that connects visual artists, writers, and performers with schools, festivals, seniors’ organizations, nursing facilities, and other groups to bring creativity into peoples’ lives. A main feature of COMPAS, is their juried roster of artists. The artists are trained in providing high quality artist residency experiences.
