November 23, 2019 marks the release of COMPAS’ 40th Anthology of Minnesota Student Writing! This year’s anthology, The World in Our Palms, includes young voices from all across the state in the forms of songs, poems, creative non-fiction, spoken word, and stories.

The anthology is a collection of writings from students in Kindergarten to grade 12 that have worked alongside COMPAS’ Teaching Writers. From writing about a cat to identity, these pieces touch the very fabric of these individuals.

Desdamona, award-wining spoken word artist, COMPAS Teaching Artist, and this year’s Anthology editor, talked about the importance of students having opportunities to explore and create through literary art:

“As I struggled through some subjects in school, the arts were where I excelled – creative expression was a place where there were endless possibilities and millions of answers.”

The struggle to thrive in different areas in school is a reality for many. “The World in Our Palms” showcases the impact creative experiences can have when integrated into the classroom. The 105 pieces of writing shine with creativity and passion.

Here's a sneak peek of the fantastic writing that will be presented:

Where Does a Poem Hide?

In your left shoe. It’s climbing
up the sock. It thinks the sock
stinks like moldy cheese.
It’s feeling cramped.

There are poems in
my broken clock.
They rip apart
the broken gears,
swallowing them
in tiny chunks.
But they swallow
the screws whole.
I want to swallow
it for that.
One day I will.

To recognize and celebrate the writing and writers, tomorrow (November 23) at the Minnesota History Center in Saint Paul, COMPAS will have a free, public event! The newly-published authors will read their works from this 40th edition of the Anthology and winners of the Lillian Wright Awards for Creative Writing will be announced.

We are so grateful for every person who makes it possible for students to unleash their creativity!
