About Your Teaching Artist

Frank Sentwali was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He began writing raps and immersing himself in hip-hop at age 11. Frank is the creator of Edu-Poetic Enterbrainment, a Twin Cities spoken word and music ensemble. Edupoetic Enterbrainment has played two tours of the Pacific Northwest and produced three full length CDs. They have been nominated for the Minnesota Music Awards three times in two different categories. Frank has spent years in the education system as a tutor, teacher and mentor. He currently co-facilitates S.E.E.D. (Sentwali Entertainment Education Division), presenting programs in schools and community centers.


About Your Residency

This virtual residency is comprised of a 6-video lesson complete with performances and instruction by Frank Sentwali, spoken word viewing recommendations, class directives, power point slides, writing samples and more. Students will write original poetry, style-write it for performance, learn a variety of theatre and performance skills, and perform final presentations.

+ Session 1

In the first video, we define spoken word poetry, learn about its literary, theatrical, and vocal elements, and consider what we want to write about in our original poems.

In the second video, we go through the steps of writing a successful poem and begin generating our rough drafts based on writing prompts.

+ Session 3

In the third video, we start revising our poems by learning about rhythm, line breaks, and pauses.

+ Session 4

In the fourth video, we continue revising and editing our poems by using literary devices such as rhyme, metaphor, personification, and more.

In the fifth video, we begin discussing choreography and stage presence and learn techniques for performing a poem successfully.

In the sixth and final video, we practice performance and vocal exercises to make our performances pop, and we prepare for a final performance.
