Dancing with Katha Dance

Dancing with Katha Dance

Flowers aren't the only things blooming in April. Creativity is blossoming across Minnesota as we wrap-up a busy month in schools. Whether it's sixth graders writing poetry at Oak View Middle School in Andover, first graders creating their own theater production at Fairview Elementary in Mora, or high schoolers gaining photography skills at Stephen/Argyle High School, COMPAS is working in depth and across the state with students of all ages.

During April and May alone, COMPAS teaching artists are working with over 7,000 Minnesota K-12 students. That's quite an achievement and thanks to you we have no plans of slowing down!

Rain and cold weather got you feeling sluggish?

If you need a little something to brighten your day, watch these kindergartners at Hillcrest Community School learning how to create animations with John Akre. Or these1st, 2nd and 3rd graders at Northview Elementary practicing northern India folk dances with Katha Dance. Either is guaranteed to make you smile.

COMPAS is always In (Good) New Company

Check out this month's artist spotlight with Lisa Berman, a talented break-dancer and member of In New Company. With her redefining of gender-norms and stereotypes, Lisa Berman knows a few things from her experiences as a B-girl in a mostly male-dominated art form.

A Youth Boost with ArtsWork Alumni Jacob Allers-Hatlie

We talked with Jacob Allers-Hatlie, a former ArtsWork participant, to pick his brain about how the artful employment experience shaped who he is today. From his humbling beginnings of drawing cats in his parent's basement, to making large-scaled mosaics, and now, finishing his studio art degree at Augsburg College, there's no telling what more creative aspirations Jacob has to offer!

"It’s good to know that there are programs like ArtsWork out there. I’m glad I got to be a part of it."
