Access to Theatre Project

VSA arts of Minnesota and Red Eye Theater collaborate to bring a poetic and courageous international dance performance from California to the Twin Cities with accommodations of ASL interpreting and audio describers. Five Foot Feat is a dance theater performance created by Catherine Cole and Christopher Pilafian, from Santa Barbara, California.

Five Foot Feat, three dancers, five feet, uses live music, spoken text and dance to focus on three characters, each of whom faces some limitation or obstacle, and then undergoes a transformation. Three years ago when Cole lost her left leg to cancer, she became interested in the public spectacle of disability. People stared or avoided eye contact with her as a walking performance art piece in a script she didn't write. She created Five Foot Feat "to work with the energy of people's visual interest in my body. I felt that by giving people permission to look, and to look on my terms, we could move beyond awkwardness to something more interesting."

The mission of VSA arts of Minnesota is to promote quality, accessible arts experiences for people with disabilities. Access to Theatre Project enables people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or low vision to participate in quality, accessible performances, and to assist arts organizations in attracting and serving these audience members.
