“It's so rewarding for me to see students open their hearts to poetry. To be able to guide them in an arts experience that could very well influence the rest of their lives. What's especially great about first graders is their presence. They are completely "there" and natural.
~ Linda Back McKay, poet in-residence at Schumann Elementary
Last spring, SASE: The Write Place gave first grade students at Schumann Elementary School in Orono a week-long residency with poet, Linda Back McKay.
Linda Back McKay began each day with a "Poem of the Day," with master poems from Myra Cohn Livingston, Valerie Worth and Langston Hughes. Students enjoyed "poetry play" -- fun activities that ranged from visual art making projects using words and pictures to acrostic poems, animal poems and poetry-in-motion movement exercises.
By the end of the residency, the students couldn’t resist outbursts to Linda Back McKay of, “I love you! Can you come back tomorrow?”
