The Gargoyle Project: Discovering The City

What do children see as they walk around their city and look at the architecture?
How do they respond to images in stone—the faces, the animals, the symbols?
The Gargoyle Project: Discovering The City is about St. Paul third graders discovering architecture and history, a new-found connection to their city, and a new friendship with Marcia McEachron, the resident artist who introduced them to clay and making gargoyles. World Cultures Magnet School collaborated with Minnesota Children's Museum to give St. Paul third graders new ways to see the city and themselves, using clay.

“It was really hard to make. It started out as a tiger but then I put it back to a ball and then I turned it into a snow leopard with a wider face. I was surprised it turned out good. This is my first time working with clay…except for play dough. I made decisions about the lines on the face-- I wanted a furry kind but I did lines like a tiger.”

~ Aaricka, Third Grade, World Cultures Magnet School, Saint Paul
