From Temple to Theater
Bharatanatyam, the ancient classical dance form of southern India, is made up of elegant body movements, intricate rhythms, descriptive hand gestures, and complex facial expressions. From Temple to Theater traces the evolution of Bharatanatyam from the ancient temples of South India to the theaters of today, using both traditional and innovative choreography to fit today’s world. Members of Ragamala Music and Dance Theater present stunning performances, accompanied by age-appropriate explanations of the technique of Bharatanatyam, and the history and culture in which it is based. This captivating presentation is designed to encourage your students to explore the arts and culture of India while teaching them to respect diversity. Return of the Rainseed
Inspired by a modern folk tale from India, Return of the Rainseed uniquely combines theater with Ranee Ramaswamy’s powerful rhythmic and gestural choreography, exhilarating music, English narration, and exquisite costumes. Ragamala presents the story of Mala, a young girl who yearns to be as brave and adventurous as her brother. When an evil demon steals the rain seed, drought strikes Mala’s homeland and sparks her ardent desire to become a boy in order to defeat the demon, retrieve the rain seed, and save her village. Return of the Rainseed follows Mala as she meets three godmothers, navigates the demon’s land, and learns to handle her newfound strength.

Ranee Ramaswamy & Gao Hong
Ranee Ramaswamy and Gao Hong have come together to create a unique and magical union of music and dance not previously seen or heard.

India and China, both lands of myth and legend as well as highly structured and stylized classical arts, are presented by these two internationally renowned artists. South Indian classical dancer Ranee Ramaswamy and Chinese pipa player Gao Hong bring to life stories from India and China, told in English by a narrator. Ranee uses precise and stylized hand gestures, subtle and varied facial expressions, and intricate rhythms, accompanied by the scintillating and evocative music of Hong’s pipa. Both artists demonstrate their art forms individually, and then join together to share their cultures.
