MEDTRONIC ARTS ACCESS DEADLINE

The Medtronic Arts Access Program seeks to enhance the vitality of the Twin Cities community through organizational grants to nonprofits that increase access to the arts, and to promote cross-cultural understanding. A grant-giving partnership with Medtronic. Application Deadline: July 27, 2007»

ArtsWork 2007, June 18 – July 27

ArtsWork 2007


This summer 72 youth, ages 14 to 21, will work with 7 artists for 6 weeks on Ecolab Plaza, at the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, and for the first time, at McDonough and El Rio Vista Recreation Centers in Saint Paul and the Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis.

THE COMPLETE WORLD OF MUSIC
Soli Hughes

Apprentices working with Soli Hughes will learn about and perform different musical styles—from pop, to jazz, to rock, to hip-hop—as soloists and with ensembles. They will also improvise, compose, and record their own music.


MIXED MEDIA MOSAICS
Sharra Frank

Sharra Frank’s apprentices will learn the basics and advanced skills needed to produce mosaics from a variety of materials. They will create individual works, and a large-scale mosaic sculpture for permanent display in a public space.


DIGITAL STORYTELLING FROM A GLOBAL VILLAGE

Sai Thao

Using the art of video storytelling, Sai Thao will help youth explore life and diversity within the unique community of the Global Market. The final product will be an apprentice-produced video.

CREATING PUBLIC ART WITH CERAMIC SCULPTURE

Denise Tennen will teach the basics of creating ceramic art and the principles of design. The final product will be a permanent, wall-mounted ceramic relief to display in the lobby of the Goodwill Easter Seals building.

DIGITAL & FILM DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

Tobechi Tobechukwu will teach youth the basics of digital and documentary photography. They will document their own lives and create a group photo essay that shows the diversity of Minnesota.

AFRICAN-BASED MOVEMENT & DRUMMING

Under the direction of Patricia Brown, apprentices will learn to express themselves through traditional dance and drumming from Africa, the Caribbean, America, and African Diaspora.

CLAY SPACE

Lisa Himmelstrup will teach basic clay techniques, including hand-building and wheel-throwing. Apprentices will create individual projects, a tile mural suitable for outdoor installation, carved slab and coil vessels, and Raku-fired ceramics.
