A Journey of Peace

Creative expression has provided opportunities for people across Minnesota to share their stories and find peace in some of life's most challenging moments. At this special time of year, we want to share a few quotes from people who have seen this transformation first-hand over the last few months:

"At the end of two weeks creating poems, stories, etc. the inmates participate in a 'public reading'. At this reading all female inmates are invited as well as administration, probation, judges, and of course COMPAS. The offenders who read more times than not get emotional and some cry. It is at this point that I know the artists have made a difference not only in the offender's lives, but their families as well." -- Jail Administrator, Washington County Jail talking about a Women's Writing Program workshop with COMPAS Teaching Artists Marci Rendon and Diego Vasquez

"It was so much fun to see the residents sharing their stories about what their collage meant. Personally, I was able to gain a better understanding of who my residents are." -- Administrator, Johanna Shores Senior Living talking about a residency with COMPAS Teaching Artist Teresa Cox

"Joy, happiness, peace, togetherness, and lasting friendships " -- Administrator at an older adult residence talking about what working with a COMPAS Teaching Artist brings to her residents

Poem written by Shea Becker, 4th Grade, Meadowbrook Elementary School, Golden Valley, Minnesota, working with COMPAS Teaching Artist Marie Olofsdotter

THE JOURNEY

Bring me on a journey of peace,

where the saddest times come alive

and then slowly fade away,

where everything is calm

and the only thing you can hear

are the good memories and the best times,

where you don’t have to suffer

if you choose not to,

where anything is possible

with peace.

Warm wishes for a peaceful holiday season, and a New Year filled with possibilities.
