Ragamala Music and Dance Theater was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Ranee Ramaswamy. Ragamala’s programs are rooted in Bharatanatyam, the ancient classical dance of southern India. Ragamala’s works blend dance, music and poetry, both ancient and modern, and provide a bridge between cultures.From Temple to TheaterType: Performance This performance traces the evolution of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from southern India, from ancient temples to the theaters of today. Ragamala artists present excerpts from the company’s repertoire, ranging from classical work to cross-cultural collaborations. They present age-appropriate explanations of the history, traditions and cultural roots of the dance form. Schedule Request Myths, Festivals and Dances: A Journey through IndiaType: Workshop Ragamala offers a variety of workshops or residencies designed to give students a hands-on experience of Indian art and culture. Choose to study Bharatanatyam; learn about music, myths and folktales of India; celebrate festivals from different areas of India; or create kolams (floor paintings). Dance-focused residencies can include a final performance of newly learned dances. Schedule Request Sva (Vital Force)Type: Performance In collaboration with Wadaiko Ensemble Tokara of Nagano, Japan, Sva (Vital Force) explores the kinships between Bharatanatyam and taiko and the artistic and cultural traditions from which they emerge. This adaptation of the main stage performance provides age-appropriate introductions to both art forms and encourages discussion across cultures. Return of the Rain Seed tells the story of Mala, a young girl who gains magical strength and saves her village by defeating a demon.
