Tri Sutrisno | Dance

1.00

Born in the central area of Java, one of the main islands of Indonesia, I began learning dance at age seven.  My formal training began as a student of Bapak Mulyono, Dance Master in the Javanese royal court.  Later, I earned a degree in Indonesian Traditional Dance at the Intermediate School Teachers' College in Surakarta.

I have danced, choreographed and taught Javanese dance from Indonesia to New Zealand to Minnesota. Always mindful of the need to maintain classical tradition, I have developed a strong foundation of performance based on its aesthetic and philosophical principles. Currently I am the dance director of Sumunar Dance Ensemble.

Residency

Indonesian Dance

I have danced, choreographed and taught Javanese dance from Indonesia to New Zealand to Minnesota. Always mindful of the need to maintain classical tradition, I have developed a strong foundation of performance based on its aesthetic and philosophical principles. Currently I am the dance director of IPAAM (Indonesian Performing Arts Association of Minnesota). My dance groups, both adult and youth, perform with the IPAAM gamelan ensemble.

My intent as a dancer, choreographer and educator is to pass on this rich artistic tradition through first-hand experiences. Through the unique qualities of Javanese dance, I seek to expand students’ cultural understanding, knowledge and appreciation. In addition, students gain skills in teamwork, coordination, focus and respect for diversity.
