"Ross is so wonderful with the students. He takes the time to show each student that he cares and enjoys working with them. It is amazing to see what talents he brings out of these students in such a short time period. The students love working with Ross and look forward to their time with him each day." -- Ms. Novacek, Tri-County School
"I would certainly have Mr. Sutter back in my classroom. He did a great job communicating with the children and showed great patience with them. They enjoyed him very much and looked forward to his arrival each day." -- Ms. Goodwin, Meadowview Elementary

Ross Sutter sings songs of Northern Europe: Sweden, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Germany. He plays the guitar, button accordion, concertina, dulcimer, and Irish goat-skinned drum. His specialty is ballads—songs that tell a story—and songs about emigration to America. In addition, Ross can teach song games and folk dances as well as instrument-building workshops on making limberjacks and simple dulcimers.

I have been doing residencies for over 25 years. My degree is in Music Education from Luther College and I have traveled extensively in Europe and North America collecting music and performing at folk clubs and festivals. I have made two recordings for children and families. Recently I have been working on several projects involving integration of my residency work in music and dance with classroom curricula in several areas including math, science, social studies, media, writing and reading.

Residency

Music & Dance

My goal in a residency is to help students recycle the old songs, dances, games and stories that their parents, grandparents and ancestors enjoyed. In a residency students can learn songs and dances from Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, Scandinavia and North America or invent their own. I've developed several simple folk instrument building workshops which combine music with classroom curricula in several areas including math, science, social studies, media, writing and reading.
