In New Company (INC) provides a performance utilizing foundational breaking (breakdancing) with contemporary and experimental concepts that will both educate and inspire. By instilling an understanding of the values and forms of expression which fuel hip hop culture, breaking highlights these values and fosters the development of self-motivation, determination, creativity and introspection. Pushing the limits is not only encouraged, but expected. The result is a completely unique dance form of self-expression and individual style. Predominantly self-taught, breaking gives a voice to individuals with limited access to the arts. In addition to showcasing highly physical and gravity-defying moves, INC provides students with basic foundational movements through demonstration and instruction, which students can then take home with them and build upon.

The heart and soul of breaking movement lies in the freestyle, moving to the music with no expectations or limitations. This is exemplified in a breaking battle, showcasing one’s adaptability to different music, spaces, and people. Within our performance, students engage in a ‘mock battle,’ experiencing the thrill of expression and rush of self-empowerment in performing for their peers.
In New Company has performed at various local venues including the Walker Art Center, First Avenue, and the Mall of America. Artistic Director, Lisa ‘MonaLisa’ Berman is the most recent recipient of a 2016 McKnight Dancer Fellowship, administered by the Cowles Center and funded by The McKnight Foundation. She has also received the Jerome Travel and Study Grant for Choreography. Individually, each member of INC brings their unique strengths, knowledge and experience to create truly collaborative and dynamic work.
INC briefly discusses the history of breaking along with the four main elements of hip hop culture: Breaking, Graffiti, Emceeing and Djing. Since it’s birth in the early 70’s, these elements have since grown into an international phenomenon. This topic may invoke post-performance discussions on the importance of being true to oneself and following their dreams.
In New Company will perform a choreographed work, followed by a brief history of breaking and hip hop culture. The history will highlight the birth of hip hop, and it’s defining four main elements. INC will then provide a demonstration to explain the separate areas of movements within breaking which, when combined, create a complete set. This interactive demonstration will include the following terminology: toprock, go-downs, footwork, powermoves, freezes, and battles. Lastly, the students will witness a ‘mock battle’ between the members of our company along with some volunteers from the audience.
